Founded in 1995, the Gwangju Biennale is the oldest biennial in Asia. In its very first year, it drew more than one million visitors. Over 500 artists from 60 different countries have taken part in the Gwangju Biennale, which has been previously curated by figures such as Harald Szeemann, Charles Esche, Hou Hanru, Sung Wan Kyung, Yongwoo Lee, Kerry Brougher, Sukwon Chang Kim Hong-hee, Wu Hung, Kim Sang-yun and Okwui Enwezor.
Massimiliano Gioni has been the Artistic Director of Fondazione Nicola Trussardi since 2002. As an institution that promotes the creation and diffusion of contemporary art and culture, the foundation commissions and produces exhibitions by international artists, who are invited to present their work in public spaces, historical buildings and landmark sites in the city of Milan.
The Fondazione Nicola Trussardi has organized exhibitions by some of the most prominent artists at work today, presenting solo shows and special projects by Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset, Darren Almond, Maurizio Cattelan, John Bock, Urs Fischer, Anri Sala, Martin Creed, Paola Pivi, Pawel Althamer, Peter Fischli & David Weiss and Tino Sehgal.
Massimiliano Gioni will retain his position as Artistic Director of Fondazione Nicola Trussardi.
Fondazione Nicola Trussardi is currently organizing Tacita Dean's first major exhibition in Italy. Entitled Still Life, this event will be held in Palazzo Dugnani—a historic building in disrepair that houses a large fresco by Giambattista Tiepolo. Open to the public from May 12 to June 21, 2009, the exhibition will feature a selection of fourteen films by Tacita Dean, including two new films commissioned and produced by Fondazione Nicola Trussardi.
